On the correct depiction of the territory of Ukraine on maps

On February 26, 2018, Kyiv geographers discussed the correct depiction of the territory of Ukraine on maps

Representatives of Kyivv Department of the Ukrainian Geographical Society Kostyantyn Mezentsev, Grygoriy Pidgrushnyi and Nataliia Provotar met with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Hungary Liubov Nepop, who emphasized the importance of using geographic opportunities to build relations between states, while stressing that history indicates the existence of those who under the slogans of “historical rights on territories of other countries” seek to legitimize their territorial claims against neighbours and even military aggression against them. She called the geographers to work together to ensure that the territory of Ukraine will be correctly depicted on maps published in Hungary and other countries.

The resolution of the All-Ukrainian Conference “Geography in Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv” (March 2018) have approved the Appeal of Ukrainian geographers on depiction of the territory of Ukraine on maps:

Notwithstanding the Appeal of the Ukrainian Geographical Society from August 2016, Resolutions No. 68/262 of 27.03.2014, №71 / 205 of 19.12.2016 and No. 72/190 of 19.12.2016 of the General Assembly of the United Nations on unconditional support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine and recognition of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city Sevastopol as an integral part of Ukraine, has recently become more frequent the depiction of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea as a part of the Russian Federation or disputed territory, as well as incorrect spelling of the name of this region of Ukraine as “Republic of Crimea”. Therefore, the geographical community of Ukraine emphasizes the inadmissibility of depiction on maps or in the media temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine any other than as a part of the territory of Ukraine and requests the International Geographical Union, International Cartographic Association, regional and national geographical societies and unions to disseminate this information and to assist in preventing manifestations of violations of international law with regard to depiction of the territory of Ukraine on maps.
